Attitudes and Beliefs About Hepatitis B Vaccination Among Gay Men: The Birmingham Measurement Study

Abstract: This study was designed to develop reliable and valid quantitative measures of the beliefs and attitudes toward hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination among gay men, using a community-based participatory research approach. A convenience sample of 358 gay men was recruited in two gay bars. Exploratory factor analysis performed on the first split-half sample was used to assess the factor structure from five scales measuring beliefs about HBV vaccination. The scales were based on constructs from the health belief mo… Show more

“…An initial item pool was created with items from a variety of established instruments including the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (Kolbe, Kann, & Collins, 1993), the Harvard College Alcohol Survey (Wechsler, Davenport, Dowdall, Moeykens, & Castillo, 1994), the Core questionnaire (Presley, Meilman, & Lyerla, 1994), and the Birmingham Measurement Study (Rhodes & Hergenrather, 2008). …”

“…Thus, the ability to measure such constructs is also seen as increasingly important [33]. This study has examined one such potential scale, the HCAMQ from a largely modern psychometric perspective.…”

“…The assessment contained 267 items with predefined binary, categorical, or Likert-scale response options to facilitate readability and administration. Items for this assessment were developed after a careful review of the literature and other college student assessments, including the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (4), the Harvard College Alcohol Survey (5), the Core questionnaire (6), and the Birmingham Measurement Study (7). The assessment took between 17 and 24 minutes to complete, depending on the skip patterns of each participant.…”

“…With the first split-half sample, principal iterative factor analysis was used to determine the underlying factor structure based on dimensionality and internal consistency. The scree test, eigenvalues, the interpretability of the factors, theoretical considerations, and Cronbach's coefficient alpha were used to examine dimensionality in the factor analysis (7). An oblique Promax rotation was used prior to interpretation of factor loadings.…”
