Attenuation of sleep deprivation dependent deterioration in male fertility parameters by vitamin C

Abstract: Purpose: Male fertility is multifaceted and its integrity is as well multifactorial. Normal spermatogenesis is dependent on competent testicular function; namely normal anatomy, histology, physiology and hormonal regulation. Lifestyle stressors, including sleep interruption and even deprivation, have been shown to seriously impact male fertility. We studied here both the effects and the possible underlying mechanisms of vitamin C on male fertility in sleep deprived rats. Methods: Thirty male Wistar albino rats… Show more

“…It is worth noting that the decrease in sperm parameters is correlated not only with thermal modifications, but also with many other stress factors, as well as the consequently higher serum glucocorticoids levels (Kumar et al, 2019;Rizk et al, 2020). Activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis by stress determines, directly or indirectly, disturbances in the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, with a reduction in testosterone levels, commitment of spermatogenesis, and sperm quality (Kumar et al, 2019).…”

“…RT-PCR assays were performed in duplicates using Applied Biosystems 7500 FAST 96-well PCR machine (USA). In order to evaluate the effects of telmisartan on visceral adipose tissue in diet induced obesity hypertension, the mRNA expression levels of the aforementioned genes were measured as described previously [ 35 37 ]. Briefly, following homogenization of either fresh or frozen rat visceral adipose tissue samples by TRI reagent (Sigma-Aldrich, UK), total RNA was extracted.…”

“…To evaluate the effects of aging and or resveratrol treatment on the studied groups, we examined the mRNA expression levels of forkhead box protein O1 (FoxO1), sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), receptor activator of nuclear factorkappa B ligand (RANKL), and osteoprotegerin (OPG) regulatory genes via real time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay as described previously [22][23][24][25]. Total RNA was extracted following grounding frozen femur bone specimens using TRI reagent (Sigma-Aldrich, UK).…”
