Attenuation of Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury by Proanthocyanidin-Rich Extract from Grape Seeds

Abstract: SummaryThe effects of proanthocyanidin-rich extract in rats subjected to renal ischemia-reperfusion were examined. Proanthocyanidin-rich extract, which is prepared from grape seeds (Vitis vinifera L.), was given orally at doses of 5 and 10mg/kg body weight/ d for 20 consecutive days prior to ischemia-reperfusion. Administration of proanthocyani din-rich extract attenuated renal dysfunction, as indicated by serum urea nitrogen and cre atinine levels. Additionally, in the ischemic-reperfused kidneys, increased l… Show more

“…Lipid profile and plasma antioxidant capacity were seen to be improved in the high‐cholesterol subjects without a concomitant improvement in the healthy individuals (89). Recent experimental trials have also suggested that proanthocyanidin‐rich extract has protective effects against ischaemia–reperfusion‐induced renal damage associated with oxidative stress (90).…”

“…The results also support that GSE is a novel, reasonably safe, and potentially cost-effective therapeutic agent for the treatment of brain injury (5,7,8,13,14). The fact that GSE in a cold environment induces hypothermia could be an advantage because postinjury hypothermia has been shown to reduce HI brain injury in human neonates (30), and agents that act synergistically with hypothermia would be welcome.…”

“…GSE protects heart function and reduces infarct size in experimental cardiac ischemia (11). GSE also reduces brain injury in the adult gerbil forebrain ischemia model (12) and attenuates renal damage in the rat renal ischemia reperfusion model (13). We have reported that pretreatment with GSE reduced brain injury in newborn rats and reduced a hypoxia-induced increase in brain lipid peroxidation (14).…”

“…Nagakawa et al [8] examined the effects of proanthocyanidin-rich extracts in rats subjected to renal ischemia-reperfusion. Their results suggested that Oligonol might play a role in modulating the cerebral and renal ischemia associated with oxidative stress.…”
