Background Reporting the second of the two targets is impaired when it occurs 200–500 ms after the first, the phenomenon in the study of consciousness is the attentional blink (AB). In the AB task, both the emotional salience and the expectation of the second target increase the likelihood of that target being consciously reported. Yet, little is known about how expectations modulate the prioritized processing of affective stimuli. We examined the role of expecting fearful expression when processing fear in an AB task. Participants were presented with an AB task where the 2nd target (T2) is either a fearful face or a neutral face, and had to report the target's gender. The frequency of fearful to neutral faces on a given block was manipulated, such that participants could either expect more or less fearful faces. Results In the Experiment 1, we found that fearful faces were more likely to be recognized than neutral faces during the blink period (lag3) when participants were not expecting a fearful face (low fear-expectation); however, high fear-expectation increased the discrimination of fearful T2 than neutral T2 outside the blink period (lag8). In the Experiment 2, we assessed ERP brain activity in response to perceived T2 during the blink period. The results revealed that fearful faces elicited larger P300 amplitudes compared to neutral faces, but only in the low fear-expectation condition, suggesting that expecting a fearful expression can suppress the processing of task-irrelevant facial expression and unexpected fearful expression can break through this suppression. Fearful T2 elicited larger vertex positive potential (VPP) amplitudes than neutral T2, and this affective effect was independent of fear-expectation. Since no effect of expectation was found on the VPP amplitude while P300 exhibited significant interaction between expectation and expression, this suggests that expectations modulate emotional processing at a later stage, after the fearful face has been differentially processed. Conclusions These results provided clear evidence for the contribution of the expectation to the prioritized processing of second affective stimuli in the AB.

Background: This study aimed to identify the effect of momentary Attentional Blink (AB) in temporarily stressful situations to reveal the relationship between emotion and attention after a traumatic experience. Methods: Participants were 57 college students randomly assigned to either an experimental group (n=30) that watched news videos depicting disasters or a control group (n=27) that did not watch them. This was followed by the Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) task for both groups. AB appeared when T1 was a news threat stimulus for the experimental and control group; the shorter the presentation interval between T1 and T2, the stronger the AB. On the other hand, when news-neutral stimuli were presented in T1, the AB pattern between the groups changed. The AB pattern appeared regardless of the type of word presented to the control group in T1; however, in the experimental group, the AB pattern appeared only when the news-neutral word was presented in T1. Results: The results suggest that AB appears when T1 is a traumatic stimulus. However, when T1 is a conditioned traumatic stimulus, the AB pattern varies depending on whether the participant watched the disaster video. Conclusions: Our results expand on existing studies by confirming the AB effect in trauma-related neutral stimuli and trauma stimuli.

In two experiments using a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) we investigated how emotional and neutral faces (T1) modulate temporal attention for a following neutral face (T2). Typically, performance for T2 is spared when T2 immediately follows T1 (lag 1 sparing) but it is impaired when T2 is presented within 500 ms from T1 (Attentional Blink). Experiment 1 shows a shorter attentional blink following happy faces, relative to neutral and sad faces, which did not differ. Experiment 2 shows a lag 1 sparing only after happy T1s, but not after angry or neutral T1s, and a greater attentional blink following happy and angry T1-faces, compared to neutral T1-faces. Results indicate that happy faces exert different effects on temporal attention than negative (angry or sad) faces. Findings are discussed in terms of an interplay of resource depletion, due to emotional salience, and emotion-specific inhibitory mechanisms.
