Attentional Blink in Pilots and Its Relationship With Flight Performance

Abstract: Objective In flight, military pilots need to monitor changes in the external environment and monitor the situation of the aircraft at the same time. Attentional blink (AB) reflects attentional blindness in time. Therefore, the present study investigated the AB effect in military pilots and its relationship with flight performance. Methods Thirty male military pilots (44.23 ± 4.07 years old) and 29 control participants (44.07 ± 2.93 years old) underwent testing with the … Show more

“…Research on eye-movements finds multiple industrial, commercial and military applications. One can design experiments to collect information on attentional blinking in military pilots (Li, Liu, Lu, & Zhu, 2020), the incidence of moving advertising on football player performance (Paterson, Kamp, & Savelsbergh, 2020) or the function of foveal and peripheral vision in action planning in basketball players (Klostermann, Vater, Kredel, & Hossner, 2020). In some cases, it will be relevant to collect data about the distance between the observer and the visual target, in other cases, about the speed and acceleration of the movement of the eye or the visual object, or the timing of blinking, and so forth.…”
