Attention modulates perception of visual space

Abstract: Attention readily facilitates the detection and discrimination of objects, but it is not known whether it helps to form the vast volume of visual space that contains the objects and where actions are implemented. Conventional wisdom suggests not, given the effortless ease with which we perceive three-dimensional (3D) scenes on opening our eyes. Here, we show evidence to the contrary. In Experiment 1, the observer judged the location of a briefly presented target, placed either on the textured ground or ceiling… Show more

“…Sixteen college students (7 females) with a mean age of 24.44 ± 0.48 years [hereafter the value following the symbol ‘ ± ’ represents one standard error of the mean (SEM)] took part in experiments 1, 2, and 3 successively over three days spanning eight weeks. The sample size was determined according to previous publications 21 23 . Procedures and protocols for this study adhered to tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki and were approved by the review board of the School of Biomedical Sciences and Engineering, Southeast University, China.…”

“…A distance-matching task was used to measure observers’ space perception, as previously performed in other studies (He et al., 2004; Sinai et al., 1998; B. Wu et al., 2007; Zhou et al., 2017). In each trial, the participant stood on a yellow landmark.…”

“…Here we report the partial results from an anonymous questionnaire on the concept of evidence that we sent to 162 corresponding authors of research articles and letters published in Nature Human Behaviour ( NHB ). We opted for NHB because of its broad scope and because the majority of its articles include the main claim in the title (e.g., from the first issue, “Pathogen prevalence is associated with cultural changes in gender equality”, 3 or “Attention modulates perception of visual space” 4 ), which made it convenient to directly reference the claim in the questionnaire. We selected 129 articles with a claim in the title published between January 2017 and April 2020.…”
