Attention Drifting In and Out: The Boredom Feedback Model

Abstract: We synthesize established and emerging research to propose a feedback process model that explicates key antecedents, experiences, and consequences of the emotion boredom. The proposed Boredom Feedback Model posits that the dynamic process of boredom resembles a feedback loop that centers on attention shifts instigated by inadequate attentional engagement. Inadequate attentional engagement is a discrepancy between desired and actual levels of attentional engagement and is a product of external and internal infl… Show more

“…The psychophysiological predictions of the MAC model are in line with other existing theories of boredom within the field of computational neuroscience. In general, theories of boredom model the effects of boredom as motivational/attentional shifts toward exploration and away from the current goal/task (Agrawal et al, 2021; Tam et al, 2021). Agrawal et al (2021) provide a computational account on how boredom shifts the valuations of goals to facilitate exploratory behaviors.…”

“…Agrawal et al (2021) provide a computational account on how boredom shifts the valuations of goals to facilitate exploratory behaviors. This is complemented by the considerations of Tam et al (2021), who operationalize those exploratory behaviors with feedback loops of attentional shifts and reappraisals of their effects on stimulation level. Evidence for these theories is provided by functional neuroimaging, which shows that boredom is related to changes in activation of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, the area involved in valuation processes (Gläscher et al, 2009; Mathiak et al, 2013).…”

“…We aim to reveal the network structure of the SBPS and CEI-II. Based on recent theorizing on boredom proneness (Danckert et al, 2018;Elpidorou, 2018aElpidorou, , 2018bMugon et al, 2018;Tam et al, 2021), we expected negative associations between boredom and exploration items and positive associations between boredom and curiosity items, when controlling for all other items in the network.…”

“…With this lens, we chose a rather understudied approach to boredom. Hitherto, functionalist [ 53 , 54 , 55 ], cognitive–affective [ 11 , 56 ], and meaning-based [ 25 , 26 , 57 ] approaches are far more widespread. While all of those approaches highlight important facets of boredom, they unilaterally reflect a psychological and quantitative research tradition (at least the last two).…”
