The application of biometric recognition in personal authentication enables the growth of this technology to be employed in various domains. The implementation of biometric recognition systems can be based on physical or behavioral characteristics, such as the iris, voice, fingerprint, and face. Currently, the attendance tracking system based on biometric recognition for education sectors is still underutilized, thus providing a good opportunity to carry out interesting research in this area. As evidenced in a typical classroom, educators tend to take the attendance of their students by using conventional methods such as by calling out names or signing off an attendance sheet. Yet, these types of methods are proved to be time consuming and tedious, and sometimes, fraud occurs. As a result, significant progress had been made to mark attendance automatically by making use of biometric recognition. This progress enables a new and more advanced biometric-based attendance system being developed over the past ten years. The setting-up of biometric-based attendance systems requires both software and hardware components. Since the software and hardware sections are too broad to be discussed in one paper, this literature survey only provides an overview of the types of hardware used. Emphasis is then placed on the microcontroller platform, biometric sensor, communication channel, database storage, and other components in order to assist future researchers in designing the hardware part of biometric-based attendance systems.

Smart and real-time door lock system for an elderly user based on face recognition

Many sophisticated smart door lock systems have been made. Still, most of them required the user to use an additional device such as a smartphone, tag, smartcard, or accessing some user interfaces, which is complicated to use for inexperienced elderly. This condition creates a gap between the elderly and technology which makes it difficult for the elderly to accept and use the technology. In this paper, we proposed a smart and real-time door lock system for an elderly user based on local binary pattern histogram as a face recognition algorithm with modular system architecture design. The novelty in our proposed system design, it does not require any additional device, it does not use any user interface, and the least user participation by automating the processes. All the user needs to do just walk toward the door and stand in front of it and the door will automatically unlock and locked back after the user enters the house and close the door. The system resulted in an accuracy of 98%, with an average processing time is 1.449 seconds for the entire process. Additional advantages, the system is designed with a modular approach that makes it flexible and scalable for further development.

Background/objectives: To propose a suitable method for marking attendance automatically. Automating the attendance is necessary these days because many of the universities/institutions are particular about their student's attendance in the classroom. But the usual method of marking attendance is proven to be tedious, inaccurate and time-consuming when the number of students in a class is more. Proxy attendance is another big issue for the teachers. Methods: This study proposes a method for marking attendance automatically using Principle Component Analysis (PCA) as a face recognition technique. The image of all the students seated in the classroom is captured and then compared with the student's database, based on which attendance of individual students is marked. An e-mail is sent to those parents whose wards were not present in the class. Findings: The students are successfully detected using Viola Jones Algorithm and recognized/identified using PCA analysis method. The database constantly updates the status of attendance of every student. This system works well even in different light settings. It can identify a person even if some of his/her features are changed. For example, it could identify a person with different haircuts, a person with or without spectacles, a reasonably old photo vs new photo etc. Novelty/improvements: Thus, the classroom time can be effectively utilized without compromising attendance. Viola Jones algorithm accurately detects faces. PCA analysis algorithm utilizes the detected faces to recognize the students by comparing it with the database.
