Attapulgite grafted with polystyrene via a simultaneous reverse and normal initiation atom transfer radical polymerization

Abstract: The surface grafting of attapulgite (ATP) with polystyrene (PS) was established via a simultaneous reverse and normal initiation atom transfer radical polymerization (SR&NIATRP). 4-(chloromethyl)phenyltrimethoxysilane (CMPTMS) chemical bounded on the surface of ATP (ATP-Cl, Cl-I) was prepared via one-step self-assembly. SR&NI ATRP of styrene was conducted using CuCl 2 complex tris(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine (Me 6 -TREN) as the catalytic system, initiated by 2,2-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) and ATP-Cl. “…The ATRP initiator grafting density can be estimated as 0.52 mmol g −1 using the method reported in our previous work (the molecular weight of the initiator moiety is about 214 g mol −1 for Br@CNTs). 59 As for PImIL@CNTs, three obvious weight loss stages could be observed. The first stage before 100 °C was ascribed to the loss of absorbed water and traces of organic solvent because of the hydrophilicity of the imidazolinium groups attracting water from the atmosphere.…”

“…S5, † the semilogarithmic kinetic plots at different BrPPO/Br@CNT feeding ratios all show a good linear relationship with the approximate nal monomer conversion. 59 It can also be seen that ARGET ATRP exhibits very similar kinetic results at different BrPPO/Br@CNTs feeding ratios, which might be that Br@CNTs (1-4 wt% of BrPPO) have very little effect on the concentration of the ATRP initiator in the whole Fig. 3 TEM images of (a) CNTs and (b) PImIL@CNTs, and (c) dispersion of H-CNTs, Br@CNTs, and PImIL@CNTs in water (i-iii) and NMP (iv).…”

“…There was an obvious peak at 531.6 eV, which was attributed to the presence of OH. The XPS spectrum of Si element was shown in Figure 2D, there was a peak at 101.2 eV, [ 56 ] which was caused by the characteristic Si═O of Pal. [ 18 ] The XPS of Si2p appeared as a single peak, so the valence state of Si did not change.…”

“…Accordingly, another increased weight loss of 6.2% for PO‐ATP was observed. The content of the peroxy group was estimated to be 0.62 mmol∙g −1 according to the formula reported previously …”

“…The surface functionalization of ATP has been confirmed the ideal approach to optimize its dispersity in the hydrophobic polymer matrix. Thus, the inorganic structure of fibrous ATP can create a nanoreinforcement effect, and the surface‐grafted organic component can promote the compatibility between the polymer blends . Compared with the short grafted chains, the long ones should be more effective to entangle with the polymer matrix and reduce the interfacial tension, especially the surface‐grafted chains with reactive functional groups .…”
