Attainment and maintenance of pubertal cyclicity may predict reproductive longevity in beef heifers

Abstract: We hypothesized the manner that heifers achieve puberty may indicate their future reproductive longevity. Heifers with discontinued or delayed cyclicity during puberty attainment may have irregular reproductive cycles, anovulation, and infertility in their first breeding season contributing to a shorter reproductive lifespan. Therefore, plasma progesterone (P4) was measured from weaning to breeding on 611 heifers born 2012–2017 and four pubertal classifications were identified: 1) Early; P4 ≥ 1 ng/ml < … Show more

“…Plasma progesterone concentrations were determined using a RIA to detect progesterone concentrations as previously described ( 76 ). Progesterone concentrations were determined using the ImmuChemTM Coated tube Progesterone 125I RIA kit (intra-assay CV = 5.64%, inter-assay CV=7.43%).…”

“…These reproductive performance parameters indicate that heifers in the NC and SSD pubertal classifications would be predisposed to a reduced reproductive lifespan. Growth was also reduced in these two pubertal classifications with lower adjusted yearling weight when compared to E and T heifers (Nafziger et al, 2021). Within the UNL physiology herd, NC (delayed puberty) heifers comprise approximately 16% of the herd with 6% in the "false start" SSD group (Nafziger et al, 2021).…”

“…Plasma progesterone concentrations were determined using a radioimmunoassay (RIA) to detect progesterone concentrations as previously described. 44 Progesterone concentrations were determined using the ImmuChemTM Coated Tube Progesterone 125I RIA kit (intra-assay CV = 2.0%, inter-assay CV = 4.46%). The sensitivity of the kit is 0.02 ng/mL.…”
