Attacking Strategies That Lead to Goal Scoring Opportunities in High Level Women's Football

Abstract: This study identified the attacking strategies that lead to goal scoring opportunities in women's football (soccer). All regular season games (n = 34) of the 2010/2011 W-League football competition were coded using performance analysis. Variables described the attacking strategies employed by teams and their association with goal scoring. It was shown that 24% (p < .001) of goals were the result of a cross (a distribution made from a wide area to a central area in front of goal). Further analysis demonstrated … Show more

“…When a team attacks from the wide, the centre backs of the opposition gets more time and can anticipate the crosses. This result is juxtaposed to Mara et al (2012), which showed that in 2010-11 season of W-league 13 24% goals were scored from crosses. That might be a serious difference between women's game and the men's game.…”

“…These conditional demands, especially those in reference to high intensity, have increased in professional soccer in recent years (Bradley et al, 2015). Multiple variables of the situation such as the location (Castellano, Blanco-Villaseñor, & Álvarez, 2011), the competitive category (Di Salvo, Pigozzi, Gonzalez-Haro, Laughlin, & De Witt, 2013), the opponent's level (Folgado, Duarte, Fernandes, & Sampaio, 2014), the tactical system (Tierney, Young, Clarke, & Duncan, 2016), the playing style (Morgans, Adams, Mullen, McLellan, & Williams, 2014), the demarcation (Andrezejewski, Chmura, Pluta, & Konarski, 2015), the origin of the players (Casamichana & Castellano, 2014) and the time with and without the ball (Da Mota, Thiengo, Gimenes, & Bradley, 2016), condition the quantity and the intensity of the efforts demanded during the competition.…”

“…In team sports, and specifically football, these procedures have facilitated the interpretation of the dynamics of play devised to score goals. (Clemente, Martins & Mendes, 2016;Mara, Wheeler & Lyons, 2012;Perl, 2001). Network analysis allows for the study into passing frequency and the establishment of probabilistic relationships between people or certain areas of the playing field.…”

“…En deportes colectivos, y en concreto en el fútbol, estos procedimientos han facilitado la interpretación de la dinámica del juego desarrollada para la consecución de goles (Clemente, Martins, & Mendes, 2016;Mara, Wheeler, & Lyons, 2012;Perl, 2001). El análisis de redes permite estudiar la frecuencia de pases y establecer relaciones probabilísticas entre personas o zonas concretas del campo de juego.…”
