Attachment anxiety, tracking accuracy, and biased memory of prior relationship evaluations

Abstract: Current and recent relationship evaluations offer important information about the strength and stability of relationships. The diagnostic value of relationship evaluations should motivate people to accurately recall recent changes in relationship quality (tracking accuracy) but may also increase sensitivity to times of low relationship quality (directional bias). “…Attachment anxiety has been described as a hyperactivating strategy , which involves excessive distress and hypervigilance to a partner's behavior in response to signs of threat. In addition to more accurately detecting deceit (Ein-Dor & Perry, 2014) and emotion (Simpson et al, 2011), and better remembering relationship quality (Chang & Overall, 2022), people who are higher in attachment anxiety appear to be more accurate, overall, in their perceptions of their partner's climate behavior, perhaps because they are often paying closer attention. It is unclear, however, why accuracy was not also moderated by attachment avoidance.…”

“…Hypervigilance among the anxiously attached has been demonstrated for recognition of attachment figures' names (Mikulincer, Gillath, & Shaver, 2002) and the onset and offset of emotional displays (Fraley, Niedenthal, Marks, Brumbaugh, & Vicary, 2006). Moreover, attachment anxiety has been associated with greater accuracy for detecting deceit in non-romantic contexts (Ein-Dor & Perr, 2014), and with more accurate memories of relationship quality (Chang & Overall, 2022), and greater empathic accuracy during a relationally threatening discussion (Simpson, Kim, Fillo, Ickes, Rholes, Oriña, & Winterheld, 2011) in a romantic context. This accuracy may plausibly extend to increased attention to a romantic partner's thoughts, feelings, and behavior more generally, and thus an increased accuracy in one's understanding of a partner's climate beliefs/behavior.…”

“…Tracking accuracy reflects the degree to which memory of depressive symptoms accurately tracks relative levels of depressive symptoms, such that people who previously experienced higher versus lower depressive symptoms are those that later report memories involving higher versus lower depressive symptoms (West & Kenny, 2011). Prior studies reveal significant tracking accuracy in memory of emotions by showing that people's memory of negative emotional states are significantly associated with the negative emotional states they reported experiencing at the earlier time points (Chang et al, 2018;Chang & Overall, 2022a, 2022b.…”

“…Parent relationship quality and parenting style significantly impact family harmony and influence the children's later development. According to a recent study on relationship evaluation by Chang and Overall, people with less secure feelings in their relationship are more negatively biased when recalling their relationship quality [10]. Generally, the studies suggest that insecure adult attachment people are more inclined to memorize adverse depressing events in their relationship, evaluate the quality of their relationship more negatively, and have more negative emotions during their relationship, thus decreasing their relationship satisfaction.…”
