Atrophy patterns of hippocampal subfields in T2DM patients with cognitive impairment

Abstract: Purpose To identify the volume changes of hippocampus subfields in T2DM patients with cognitive impairment and to determine how these atrophy patterns associate with impairments in different cognitive domain. Methods A total of 117 individuals were recruited, including T2DM patients with cognitive impairment (T2DM-CI) (n = 34), T2DM patients without cognitive impairment (T2DM-non-CI) (n = 36) and normal controls (NC) (n = 47). All subjects went through a 3.0 T magnetic resonance (MR) scan and a neuropsychologi… Show more

“…Anatomically, atrophied structures, including the presubiculum and parasubiculum, were situated at the medial portions of the hippocampus, while the molecular layer of the HP, CA1 and HATA were situated at the lateral portions. In fact, the volume of the presubiculum or parasubiculum, which is related to cognitive level, has been found to be decreased in many diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease ( Low et al, 2019 ; Zhao et al, 2019 ; Li et al, 2020 ). The presubiculum and parasubiculum play an important role in cognitive processing and visual spatial function ( Low et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Dopaminergic projection to hippocampus participates in cognitive function in PD (Jokinen et al 2009). The CA1 region of the hippocampus is involved in cognitive processes, particularly learning, and memory (Li et al 2020), and which along with CA3, forms the hippocampal Schaffer collateral pathway, is one of the most studied hippocampal synaptic pathway (Zamora-Moratalla and Martín 2021). Dopamine (DA) released from dopaminergic neurons plays important roles in synaptic plasticity processes.…”
