Atrial fibrillation: the cost of illness in Sweden

Abstract: AimTo provide an estimate of the annual cost of atrial fibrillation (AF) in Sweden.MethodsPrevalence-based cost analysis of AF in Sweden for 2007. Direct medical (hospitalizations, hospital outpatient care, primary health care, non-pharmacological interventions, pharmaceuticals, and anticoagulation monitoring) and non-medical (transportation associated with health care visits) costs of AF, direct costs of AF complications (stroke and heart failure), and indirect costs (production loss), were included. “…In patients invited to systematic screening, 53% registered ECG, and a new AF diagnosis was noted in 52/2357 (2%). The UK study from Fitzmaurice et al 35 lacks data on OAC treatment, both in patients with known AF and in patients newly diagnosed with AF. Data on OAC is of importance for calculations of cost effectiveness because the majority of costs for AF stem from stroke care.…”

“…As a comparison, it has been estimated that the total cost of all gastrointestinal illnesses in Sweden amount to approximately €1 billion, based on a cohort study with 3241 participants [58]. Annual COI estimates have also been reported for other illnesses in Sweden, such as rheumatoid arthritis (€600 million) [59], breast cancer (€330 million) [60] and atrial fibrillation (€708 million) [61]. The estimations of the true number of cases of each illness were calculated by multiplying the number of reported cases by a pathogen-specific MF.…”

“…As principais complicações da FA são a insuficiência cardíaca e o AVC isquémico, sendo este último a complicação mais grave 28,29 . A relação entre a FA e o AVC é inequívoca: os doentes com FA têm um risco ajustado para a idade cinco vezes superior ao da população em geral 30 .…”
