Atrial fibrillation prevalence, awareness and management in a nationwide survey of adults in China

Abstract: ObjectiveTo determine AF prevalence and gaps in atrial fibrillation (AF) awareness and management in China.MethodsWe conducted a community-based survey of 47 841 adults (age ≥45 years) in seven geographic regions of China between 2014 and 2016. Participants underwent a structured questionnaire, a standard 12-lead ECG, physical examination and blood sampling. AF prevalence, defined by either ECG detection or self-report, was estimated according to sampling weights, non-response and age and sex distribution of t… Show more

“…However, only 6.0% of patients with high-risk AF received anticoagulation therapy. 31 Therefore, more efforts at the community level are needed for stroke prevention. Considerable efforts were made to improve adherence to evidence-based performance measures among patients with acute ischemic stroke in China.…”

“…In China, nearly 7.9 million (about 2%) people suffer from atrial fibrillation ( 15 ). In addition, the anticoagulated rate and comorbidities control rate are quite low (6 and 4% respectively) ( 15 , 16 ), thus comprehensive management seems to be urgent for Chinese population. However, the beneficial evidence of this kind of pathway remains limited in Chinese population.…”

“…In 2010, AF was the most common type of arrhythmia (estimated lifetime risk of 22%-26%), as it affected ~33.5 million individuals worldwide (7). More recently, a large national survey revealed that ~7.9 million people suffer from AF in China (8). AF is associated with substantial morbidity, reduced quality of life (QOL), and increased mortality due to the combination of altered hemodynamics, progressive atrial and ventricular mechanical dysfunction, heart failure, and thromboembolic complications; thus, AF is a major burden on the healthcare systems.…”
