Atrial Fibrillation Is Associated With a Worse 90-Day Outcome Than Other Cardioembolic Stroke Subtypes

Abstract: Background and Purpose Patients with a cardioembolic stroke (CES) have worse outcomes than stroke patients with other causes of stroke. Among patients with CES, atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common comorbidity. Mounting data indicates that AF may relate to stroke pathogenesis beyond acute cerebral thromboembolism. We sought to determine whether AF represents an independent risk factor for stroke severity and outcome among patients with CES. Methods We retrospectively analyzed patients with acute hemispheric … Show more

“…15,18 Patient demographics, laboratory data, comorbidities, preadmission medications, and stroke pathogenesis (using the Causative Classification System for Ischemic Stroke [CCS] as previously described 15,18 ) after completion of diagnostic evaluation, were collected on all patients. NIHSS scores were assessed at the time of presentation by members of the stroke team certified in NIHSS.…”

“…Полученные в настоящем исследовании результаты подтверждают имеющиеся в литературе данные [15,16] о высокой эффективности реперфузионной терапии, приводящей к уменьшению летальности и увеличению частоты благоприятного функционального восстановления. Кроме того, было показано, что разные факторы, способствующие повышению проницаемости сосудистой стенки, могут стать причиной СГТ при проведении СТЛТ.…”
