Atrial fibrillation and platelet reactivity

Abstract: Objectve: Relationships between platelet reactivity and atrial fibrillation (AF) have not been investigated before. Thus, platelet reactions after stimulation were compared with the presence of sinus rhythm (SR) after a surveillance period exceeding two years after elective electrical cardioversion.Merthods: 33 individuals with non-valvular AF subject to elective electrical cardioversion were consented. Immediately before cardioversion determination of markers (see below) reflecting platelet reactivity was car… Show more

“…Notably, AA, enriched in the HTN-AF group, interacted with other differential fatty acids and contributed to multiple inflammatory and pathogenic pathways, including Fc epsilon RI signaling pathway, Fc gamma R-mediated phagocytosis, aldosterone synthesis and secretion, platelet activation, ferroptosis, and necroptosis, etc. [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ].…”

“…Different platelet reactivity was found in patients with and without AF. 16 Therefore, receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were performed after stratifying the patient population by occurrence of AF. In patients without AF, the AUC was 0.708 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.672-0.743; P<0.001; Table 2 and Figure 2A) for platelet counts as predictors of in-hospital all-cause mortality.…”

“…Both surface-bound P-selectin and fibrinogen were determined using a Beckman Coulter EPICS XL-MCL flow cytometer (Beckman Coulter Inc., Brea, CA, USA). Previous communications from our laboratory describe the procedures in detail [13,14]. In brief, a phycoerythrinconjugated monoclonal antibody against glycoprotein Ib (Dako AS, Denmark) recognized platelets.…”

“…Frequently, surface expression of P-selectin and fibrinogen following stimulation, as determined by flow cytometry, is used as a platelet reactivity measure [12,13]. The latter determination reflects activated glycoprotein IIb/IIIa [14]. Surface-bound P-selectin in vivo is a sign of platelet activation and -granule release.…”
