Atrial fibrillation after esophagectomy is a marker for postoperative morbidity and mortality

Abstract: Atrial fibrillation is a surrogate for surgical morbidity and mortality after esophagectomy. The occurrence of atrial fibrillation after esophageal resection should prompt not only the appropriate management of the arrhythmia but also a search for a more ominous underlying cause.

“…There are a few reports on postoperative tachyarrhythmia after open esophagectomy for treating esophageal cancer [10][11][12][13][14]16]. The incidence of tachyarrhythmia after conventional open esophagectomy is observed with a high frequency of 12.5-33 % [5,10,[12][13][14].…”

“…Surgical resection for carcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia is still arguably one of the most morbid thoracic operations. Although patient selection and improved postoperative care can significantly decrease hospital mortality rates, the morbidity rate remains high [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Tachyarrhythmia is among the most frequent complications of esophagectomy [10,[12][13][14].…”
