ATP-binding cassette transporters of the multicellular cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120: a wide variety for a complex lifestyle

Abstract: Two hundred genes or 3% of the known or putative protein-coding genes of the filamentous freshwater cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 encode domains of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. Detailed characterization of some of these transporters (14-15 importers and 5 exporters) has revealed their crucial roles in the complex lifestyle of this multicellular photoautotroph, which is able to differentiate specialized cells for nitrogen fixation. This review summarizes the characteristics of the ABC transpo… Show more

“…In Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, the RND-like DevBCA efflux system is responsible for the secretion of glycolipids during heterocyst differentiation (Staron et al, 2011;Shvarev and Maldener, 2018). Sll1481 and Sll1482 exhibit relatively high homology to DevB and DevC, respectively, even though Synechocystis does not undergo cellular differentiation.…”

“…The function of HgdD as a major component of the metabolite export system has been further demonstrated by proving its involvement in the translocation of antibiotics, exogenous compounds (e.g., ethidium bromide), proteins and siderophores (Moslavac et al, 2007;Nicolaisen et al, 2010;Hahn et al, 2012;Stevanovic et al, 2012) (for a recent review on ATP-binding cassette transporters in Anabaena sp. PCC 7120, some of which shown to bind HgdD, see Shvarev and Maldener, 2018). In many of these studies, it has also been possible to identify and characterize some of the IM translocase components involved in TolC-mediated efflux (Nicolaisen et al, 2010;Staron et al, 2011;Hahn et al, 2012;Stevanovic et al, 2012).…”

“…We analyzed the glycolipid composition of mutant and wild-type hgl layers using thin-layer chromatography (TLC) of methanol extracts of both strains after nitrogen stepdown. We analyzed the content at two temperatures (20 and 28 °C) because the ratio of the major HGL forms can vary at different temperatures (43, 44). Both wild-type and mutant extracts contained the major HGLs, HGL 26 keto-ol and HGL 26 diol (45) at both temperatures (Fig.…”

“…Several homologs of the devBCA gene cluster in the genome of Anabaena sp. have been identified (19, 20). Some are important for diazotrophic growth and heterocyst maturation (2123).…”
