“…In order to figure out the active sites, a combination of surface sensitive methods and reactivity studies must be sophisticatedly designed 36. Fresh and clean MoS 2 polygonal single layer sheets with different sizes and area coverages could be obtained by a physical vapor deposition and followed by annealing 37. After characterizing by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) under ultrahigh vacuum chamber ( Figure 1 a) to get structure information, the products was tested for HER activity respectively.…”

“…The single layer MX 2 has 3-fold rotational symmetry since M and X atoms occupy alternating hexagonal corners at different height. The growth process therefore naturally favors triangular domains as is clearly shown in CVD grown samples and nanoparticles of MX 2 [43,44]. Our MBE grown samples are bound to have a mixture of the domains with triangle point up (uptriangle domain) and its mirror twin domain pointing downwards (down-triangle domain), since they are energetically degenerate.…”

“…Seen from above this forms a honeycomb lattice with Mo and S at the two sites, see e.g. [206,207]. The Fermi surface is disconnected and centered around the K, K points.…”
