Atomic Layer Deposition of FeO on Pt(111) by Ferrocene Adsorption and Oxidation

Abstract: We report the synthesis of a sub-monolayer thick film of FeO(111) on the Pt(111) surface using atomic layer deposition (ALD) under well-defined ultra high vacuum (UHV) conditions. FeO islands were characterized by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). FeO(111) on Pt(111) was prepared through adsorption and oxidation of ferrocene. Because ferrocene adsorption is crucial to the overall process, it was studied in… Show more

“…7 shows the dominant peak at 529.9 eV attributed to iron oxides [51]. Second component at 531.5 eV could be ascribed to subnanometer FeO clusters [62] or Fe-OH [63]. The oxygen spectrum also contains a weak high energy component at 532.9 eV assigned to B-O species, as will be discussed later.…”

“…For this specific case it means that depositing Fe 2+ , as required in FeTiO 3 , is very challenging. Several attempts at doing this with many different precursors have very recently led to an advance in this field, and ALD of both FeO and Fe 3 O 4 have been reported in the last two years . Combination of such processes, yielding lower oxidation state ions with existing routes for other metals would open up a very interesting new area of ALD chemistry, and possibly samples of great interest.…”

“…The adsorbate coverage is determined from XP models as outlined in Ref. [32][33][34][35]. In order to validate the CVD-based catalytic results and to obtain a broader experimental basis of the Pd-Zr 0 system with respect to methanol steam reforming performance, also an intermetallic bulk phase of …”
