Atomic absorption spectrometric determination of mercury in soil standard reference material following microwave sample pretreatment

Abstract: Abstract. Several decomposition procedures and their influence on the determination of mercury by electrothermal (ET) and cold vapour (CV) atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) have been studied. Soil samples were decomposed by microwave digestion in closed and open vessels as well as by digestion under reflux according to German standard. The use of different acids (HNO 3, HC1 or aqua regia) was evaluated and compared in respect to their influence on the determination of mercury by ET AAS and CV AAS. The diges… Show more

“…Hg vapors were stripped with argon and transferred to the absorption cell. The CV-AAS has been developed to measure low concentrations, and FIAS provides excellent selectivity and sensitivity (Bulska et al, 1995;Lalor et al, 2005) with a detection limit of 0.10 µg kg −1 . The accuracy of the method was verified through an analysis of a calcareous loam soil CRM 141 R standard reference material (Quevauviller et al, 1996).…”

“…This technique has been confirmed as a method of choice over conventional procedures for digestion of mineral and biological samples for total Hg determination [1,2,3], due to a shorter extraction time, a higher extraction efficiency and easier control of digestion parameters. Both closed and open microwave systems are used for the digestion of samples for the total Hg analyses.…”

“…Such methods are based on a wide range of techniques, like inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) [15,16], capillary column gas chromatography (CC-GC) [17], neutron activation analysis [18], nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) [19], electrothermal atomization atomic absorption spectrometry (ETA-AAS) [10,20,21], cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS) [10, 11, 13, 22 -33], cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CV-AFS) [34] and, not recently, also potentiometric stripping analysis [35 -37].…”
