Atom Pair Distribution Functions of Liquid Water at 25°C from Neutron Diffraction

Abstract: The structure of liquid water is described by three atom pair distribution functions gOO(r), gOH(r), and gHH(r). These functions have now been derived from neutron diffraction data on four mixtures of light and heavy water. They will provide a crucial and sensitive test for proposed models of liquid water.

“…During this time, the particle is displaced on the average by the distance S 2 1/2 = u 2 2 1/2 τ 2 ≈ a c . However τ 2 = u 2 τ 0 / u 2 2 in accordance with the second equation in (60). This leads to the expression u 2…”

“…Such a model was apparently first put forward in literature in the known study [52] and then was developed in the works [53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61]. Within the framework of this approach it is possible to explain many anomalies of liquid water (it is possible to find details on the website [62]).…”

“…The solute water molecule was placed in the xz plane with the z axis bisecting the H-O-H angle. Experimental evidence 41,42 indicates that a tetrahedrally coordinated water molecule is present in liquid water and therefore we constructed a cluster containing the first solvation shell from Ref. 7.…”

“…Water structure is primarily determined experimentally from x-ray 39,40,49,[61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68] and neutron scattering 9, 42,45,[69][70][71][72][73][74][75] . Scattering experiments probe the differential scattering cross-section 76 , dσ/dΩ, defined as the ratio of the scattering cross-section dσ scattered into the solid angle dΩ about the scattering angleθ 76 .…”
