Atmospheric Response to SST Anomalies. Part II: Background-State Dependence, Teleconnections, and Local Effects in Summer

Abstract: In this paper and its companion, Part I, we explore the response of the atmosphere to sea surface temperature anomalies in different geographical locations and seasons. In Part I, we focused on Northern Hemisphere winter (DJF), whereas in this paper, Part II, we focus on summer (JJA) and interseasonal comparisons. We use two different configurations of the same idealized atmospheric model, constructed using two different configurations of continents and topography. These configurations give rise to slightly di… Show more

“…We focus on the cold season because this is when tropical-to-polar teleconnections are most active (e.g., Lee et al, 2009;Thomson & Vallis, 2018a, 2018b. “…The year-0 IPO is also associated with subsequent trends in the cold season (October-March) atmospheric circulation. We focus on the cold season because this is when tropical-to-polar teleconnections are most active (e.g., Lee et al, 2009;Thomson & Vallis, 2018a, 2018b. Negative year-0 IPO is linked to subsequent decreasing mean sea level pressure trends in the North Pacific (Figure 2e), reflecting a strengthening of the AL.…”

“…Various models of Earth's atmosphere have been constructed using Isca and are described in more detail elsewhere (e.g., [11,[28][29][30][31]). Here, we give three examples covering the range of possibilities.…”

“…The ocean is the most important source of long-term memory that interacts with the atmosphere (Frankignoul 1985;Kushnir et al 2002;Kaspi and Schneider 2011;Putrasahan et al 2013;Thomson and Vallis 2018). The atmospheric response to SST anomalies (SSTA) in the tropics is more direct and local, i.e.…”
