The purpose of this study is to analyze the chemical composition of wet precipitation in samples collected at three stations in the Candiota region in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Samples were collected in 2004. Variables analyzed in wet precipitation were pH, conductivity, and concentration of Cl − , NO − 3 , SO 2− 4 F − , Na + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , K + , NH + 4 , Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Pb, Ni, Cd, Co, and Cr. SO 2 and NO 2 distribution over the time were also evaluated. Results have showed that pH < 5.6 are found mostly at Candiota airport (85%), followed by Aceguá (72%) and Três Lagoas (65%). Enrichment Factor of the studied ions in wet deposition revealed higher Ca 2+ and SO 2− 4 enrichment in Três Lagoas. Factor Analysis applied to metals and major ions allowed identifying the major sources. While Cl − , Na + , Mg 2+ are of marine origin, SO 2− 4 , NO − 3 , NH + 4 , F − come from anthropogenic sources. Except for Fe and Mn originating from the soil dust, the metals studied showed to have anthropogenic influence The average SO 2 and NO 2 concentration, as well as SO 2− 4 and NO − 3 in wet precipitation in the Candiota region showed higher concentrations during the warmer months.

Spent alkaline and Zn-C batteries were placed in seawater, rainwater or landfill leachate at room temperature for up 30 days in order to simulate natural weathering. After the experiments pH and electrical conductivity of the liquid were measured. The precipitate formed and the filtrate were submitted to metal analysis by ICP-OES. Seawater is the most corrosive medium, followed by landfill leachate. Pb, Cd and Hg were mainly in the filtrate. Fe, Mn and Zn were generally dominant in the precipitate. Na and K account for the electrical conductivity and are good indicators of the corrosion stage of the batteries.Keywords: spent batteries; weathering; heavy metals. INTRODUÇÃOIntemperismo é um conjunto de processos naturais de origem física (desagregação), química (decomposição) e biológica que causa a alteração dos materiais na superfície da Terra ao longo do tempo. 1,2 O produto desta deterioração é uma mistura de novos materiais que são estáveis no ambiente em que se deu a transformação. 1 Esses processos são aplicáveis ao estudo de degradação e/ou decomposição de qualquer material disposto em condições naturais de superfície.A lixiviação é o processo onde constituintes de um material sólido são liberados para o meio ambiente durante o contato com um fluxo de líquido por percolação ou difusão. 3,4 A água, seja como reagente ou como solvente, é o principal agente do intemperismo. 4 A solução contendo constituintes dissolvidos da fase sólida é chamada lixiviado. 3 A capacidade de transferência dos constituintes da fase sólida para o lixiviado (lixiviabilidade) é determinada expondo-se o material a uma solução com características conhecidas e determinando-se o grau de dissolução dos contaminantes. 4 A lixiviabilidade dos componentes depende de diversos fatores: tamanho de partícula (área superficial exposta); temperatura (solubilidade dos solutos na água); tempo de contato (estabelecimento ou não do equilíbrio de lixiviação); 3,4 agitação; relação líquido/sólido; pH (um dos fatores dominantes da mobilidade, solubilidade, complexação e retenção de metais pesados em solos, sedimentos e resíduos); 5,6 condições redox (importante quando os compostos formados na presença de oxigênio têm diferença significativa na solubilidade em relação àqueles formados sob condições redutoras); presença de agentes complexantes, CO 2 e O 2 ; presença de matéria orgânica dissolvida e em suspensão (ela influencia a biodisponibilidade e a mobilidade de metais pesados); 7,8 presença de micro-organismos (intemperismo biológico). The mass balance of molybdenum (Mo) was studied in the Strengbach catchment. Monitoring of rainfall, vegetation, and soil characteristics in this 0.8 km 2 catchment was started decades ago. We present Mo concentrations and isotope compositions of about 60 samples including bedrock types, perennial springs, soil profiles, roots and leaves, and the outflowing brook. Both stream waters and bedrocks have Mo concentrations at least one order of magnitude lower than global averages. The Mo isotope composition of topsoils, foliage, litter, and roots is rather homogeneous. Net biological fractionation is thus subordinate to differences in the Mo sources. Efficient Mo recycling from organic litter to plants keeps Mo bioavailable. The Mo and Sr isotope data, are used to identify the source(s) of Mo and Sr and their (transient) storage within the catchment. The resulting best model identifies rock weathering and seawater derived aerosol as the principal Mo sources. Moreover, soil in the Strengbach catchment has reached steady state for Mo (the time constant to achieve soil steady state is calculated to be in in the order of 50 years) where the Mo isotope compositions of fluxes to and from the catchments soil are identical.
