Moss biomonitoring is a widely used technique for monitoring the accumulation of trace elements in airborne pollution. A total of one hundred and five samples, mainly of the Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. moss species, were collected from the Northern Greece during the 2015/2016 European ICP Vegetation (International Cooperative Program on Effects of Air Pollution on Natural Vegetation and Crops) moss survey, which also included samples from the metalipherous area of Skouries. They were analyzed by means of neutron activation analysis, and the elemental concentrations were determined. A positive matrix factorization (PMF) model was applied to the results obtained for source apportionment. According to the PMF model, five sources were identified: soil dust, aged sea salt, road dust, lignite power plants, and a Mn-rich source. The soil dust source contributed the most to almost all samples (46% of elemental concentrations, on average). Two areas with significant impact from anthropogenic activities were identified. In West Macedonia, the emissions from a lignite power plant complex located in the area have caused high concentrations of Ni, V, Cr, and Co. The second most impacted area was Skouries, where mining activities and vehicular traffic (probably related to the mining operations) led to high concentrations of Mn, Ni, V, Co, Sb, and Cr.

This study aims to investigate the changes in atmospheric deposition trends in Macedonia, using a moss biomonitoring technique. This technique has been used to assess the content of potentially toxic elements in Macedonia in 2002, 2005, 2010, and 2015, within the framework of the International Cooperative Program on Effects of Air Pollution on Natural Vegetation and Crops. The content of 42 elements was analyzed using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometry (ICP–AES), and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), on 72 moss samples collected in the summer of 2015. The median values of the elements studied were compared with data from previous years and with median values obtained from comparable studies in Norway and the neighboring countries. Through factor and cluster analysis, three geogenic factors were identified: Factor 1, which includes the elements Al, Ce, Fe, Hf, La, Li, Na, Sc, Sm, Tb, Ti, Th, V, and U; Factor 4, which includes As, Cl, and I; and Factor 5, which includes the elements Ba and Sr. In addition, one geogenic-anthropogenic factor containing Co, Cr, and Ni (Factor 2), was identified, and one anthropogenic factor containing Cd, Pb, Sb, and Zn (Factor 3). The lead and zinc mines near the towns of Kriva Palanka, Probištip, and Makedonska Kamenica in the eastern region of the country, the former lead and zinc smelter in the town of Veles, and the ferronickel smelter near Kavadarci, have continuously had the greatest anthropogenic impact on the atmospheric deposition of potentially toxic elements during the time period of the study. In addition to the human influences, the lithology and the composition of the soil continue to play a significant role in the distribution of the elements.

One of the most important aspects in solving problems of environmental protection and human health is the control of atmospheric air quality. The most dangerous environmental pollutants are heavy metals (HM). In most European countries, the need to study the consequences of their impact on the environment and human health has led to the establishment of national and international programs for the biomonitoring of heavy metal atmospheric deposition. Data on atmospheric fallout of HMs and other toxic elements are collected based on the analysis of moss biomonitors, which serve as an analogue of aerosol filters. Under the auspices of the United Nations Commission on Transboundary Transport of Atmospheric Deposition in Europe (UNECE ICP Vegetation), an Atlas of Atmospheric Deposition of Heavy Metals is published every 5 years. International team of the sector of neutron activation analysis and applied research of the FLNP JINR contributes to these Atlases since 1995. Study of atmospheric deposition of heavy metals and other toxic elements in a number of JINR member and non-member states (Azerbaijan, Albania, Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Greece, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Western Ukraine, North Macedonia, Serbia and Croatia), including some areas of Central Russia (Moscow, Tula, Tver, Ivanovo, Yaroslavl, Vladimir, Samara, Ryazan’ regions, as well as the South Urals and the North Caucasus (Republic of Ichkeria, North Ossetia) made it possible to identify and assess the areas of these pollutions in the studied territories and compare with the levels of similar pollution in Western Europe The possibility of expanding this program to countries in Asia and the Pacific is currently being discussed.
