Atmospheric and precipitation chemistry over the North Atlantic Ocean: Shipboard results, April–May 1984

Abstract: During a North Atlantic cruise from Dakar, Senegal, to Woods Hole, Massachusetts (April 14-May 11, 1984), crossing the area of 14ø-48øN1 17ø-70øW, we collected atmospheric aerosols (C, N, S species), gases (SO 4, HNO 3, dimethyl sulfide (DMS), synthetic organic chemicals), and precipitation (major inorganic/organic ions, trace metals). Air masses that had not contacted land for over S days had a composition close to that from the remote marine atmos-3Department

“…For example, the 206 Pb/ 207 Pb ratios varied from 1.186 to 1.187 in April to 1.177 to 1.180 in November, 1989. That variation is attributed to the relative accumulation of contaminant lead inputs from the North Atlantic trade easterlies between May andOctober, 1989 (Ve´ron et al, 1993). “…The extent of such variations seems to be limited to the depth (50 m) of the seasonal thermocline (Levitus, 1982), based on the convergence of isotopic compositions in the vertical profiles in April andNovember, 1989 (Ve´ron et al, 1993). Since purely vertical transport accounts for less than 10% of the 3 H-3 He distribution into the subtropical North Atlantic thermocline (Jenkins, 1980), a ventilated thermocline model for industrial lead distribution within the western Sargasso Sea was developed (Boyle et al, 1986;Shen and Boyle, 1988).…”

“…Rainwater was not analyzed for Fe content because of difficulties in ensuring trace metal free conditions in such determinations. Instead, we referred to the rain iron concentration data of from Lewes, Delaware, USA (0.27 pM) and Bermuda (0.09 PM), and from Church et al (1991) for oceanic rain (from 0.1 to 0.5 pM) to plan our experiments. Fe concentrations of ambient surface seawater were not measured; concentrations were most likely in the nanomolar to subnanomolar range (Powell et al 1995, Zhuang et al 1995.…”
