“…The study plot broadly fit the AM characterization, with small organic horizons and dominance of NO3 over DON in surface soil solutions (Goodale et al ., ). The second rationale was that regional analyses of tree growth in responses to N deposition show that the three main AM tree species at this site (white ash, sugar and red maple) all show significantly enhanced growth at the N deposition rates observed nearby (8–10 kg N ha −1 yr −1 ; Butler et al ., ); by contrast, of the six ECM species at this site, four (basswood, beech, black birch, and hemlock) showed no effect of N deposition on growth and two (red oak, quaking aspen) had moderate growth enhancements (Thomas et al ., ). Yet, 15 N tracer recoveries at this site showed nearly the opposite response: the ECM species that acquired the most 15 N (beech, hemlock, basswood, aspen; Table S1) were largely those that do not show regional N‐driven growth enhancements, while the AM species that do show these growth enhancements acquired little of this study's 15 N.…”
