Oxygenation of Earth’s oceans and atmosphere through time has consequences for subducted surface signatures that are now stored in the mantle. Here, we report significant mass-dependent selenium isotope variations in modern hot spot–influenced oceanic lavas. These variations are correlated with tracers of mantle source enrichment, which can only be explained by incorporation of abyssal pelagic sediments subducted from a redox-stratified mid-Proterozoic ocean. Selenium geochemical signatures of these sediments have mostly been preserved during long-term recycling and may therefore complement the global surface sediment record as ancient oxygen archives. Combined deep mantle and surface perspectives, together with emerging models for atmospheric oxygen based on selenium systematics, further imply a significantly oxygenated ocean-atmosphere system throughout the mid-Proterozoic.

Mega volcanic eruptions associated with the formation of Large Igneous Provinces (LIPS) pump vast amounts of carbon dioxide and sulfur-rich gases into the atmosphere and stratosphere with the potential to totally change the chemistry of the global ocean. Here we investigate the sedimentary pyrite sulfur isotope record of black shales through time and demonstrate two coherent populations termed P1 and P2. Population P1 dominates the Archean pyrites, has a mean of δ 34 S = +3.7‰, standard deviation of 5.3‰, and is considered to represent S of mantle origin. Population P2 appears toward the start of the Proterozoic, dominates the Phanerozoic, has a mean around +25‰ and standard deviation of 13.5‰, and is considered to represent S of seawater sulfate origin. Population P1 can be identified in sedimentary pyrite at certain times in the Proterozoic and Phanerozoic, which correspond, within error, with the timing of 25 major LIP events. Our data suggest that at regular times through the Proterozoic, coinciding with major LIP events, the oceans contained a mixture of seawater sulfate and dissolved mantle sulfide derived from the LIPs. LA-ICP-MS analyses of the sedimentary pyrite indicate that metals, particularly gold, nickel, cobalt, and PGE were also enriched in the oceans at these times. The long periods between major LIP eruptions enabled the oceans to return to a seawater sulfate background equilibrium with a decrease in the mantle-derived metals.

Recent results on ca. 1,380 Ma LIPs and black shales indicate a temporal link between LIPs and black shales and suggest a potential way for using coeval LIPs and black shales as natural markers for boundaries in the Mesoproterozoic timescale. In this chapter, we provide a brief review of LIPs and black shales during "the Boring Billion" in different cratons. The results show that in addition to the ca. 1,380 Ma LIP activity that is coeval with black shales, other major LIPs during this period can preliminarily be divided into several stages and are likely/possibly contemporaneous with black shales, especially the 1,650-1,620 Ma and ca. 1,100 Ma LIPs. Our results demonstrate that the global-scale LIPs and black shales in the Boring Billion can potentially be used as natural markers for subdivisions of the Proterozoic timescale. The results also suggest that, while the Boring Billion was characterized by suboxic or mildly oxygenated marine basins, it was interrupted by several OAEs that are partly caused by the environmental impact of LIPs. Preliminarily proposed correlation of LIPs and black shales provide a new way to explain the fluctuating evolution of atmosphere, life, and marine basins during the Boring Billion as identified by many recent studies.
