Atmocosmics: A Geant 4 Code for Computing the Interaction of Cosmic Rays With the Earth's Atmosphere

Abstract: We have developed a new Monte Carlo code called ATMOCOSMICS based on GEANT 4 that simulates the interaction of cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere. The code allows to compute the flux of secondaries (e-, e+, protons, neutrons, gammas, muons, pions, …) at user-defined atmospheric depths and/or altitudes. Profiles of the energy deposited by atmospheric shower particles into the atmosphere vs depth and/or altitude can be calculated. We present examples of simulation results obtained with the code, and compare… Show more

“…Accordingly, we use a full Monte Carlo model, CRAC:CRII (Usoskin and Kovaltsov, 2006;Usoskin et al, 2010), based on the CORSIKA Monte Carlo package. A similar result can be obtained with the PLANETOCOSMIC (Desorgher et al, 2005) based on the GEANT package. The agreement between the two models has been verified (Usoskin et al, 2009) to be within 10 %.…”

“…For the computation of NM cut-off rigidity and asymptotic cones we used the MAGNETOCOSMICS code (Desorgher et al, 2005). We employed a combination of the geomagnetic model IGRF (epoch, 2015) (Macmillan et al, 2003) as the internal field and the Tsyganenko 89 model (Tsyganenko, 1989) for the external field.…”

“…The PLANETOCOSMICS code (http://cosray.unibe.ch/ ∼laurent/planetocosmics) is a Geant4 application originally designed to compute the electromagnetic and hadronic interaction of energetic particles (<1 TeV) with the Earth, Mars and Mercury, taking the respective planetary atmosphere, magnetic field, and soil into account (Desorgher et al 2005;Bütikofer et al 2008). The code was developed so that the implementation of new atmospheric and magnetic field models, as well as the extension to other planetary environments, is rather simple.…”
