Atlantic CFC data in CARINA

Abstract: Abstract.Water column data of carbon and carbon-relevant parameters have been collected and merged into a new database called CARINA (CARbon IN the Atlantic). In order to provide a consistent data set, all data have been examined for systematic biases and adjusted if necessary (secondary quality control (QC)). The CARINA data set is divided into three regions: the Arctic/Nordic Seas, the Atlantic region and the Southern Ocean. Here we present the CFC data for the Atlantic region, including the chlorofluorocarb… Show more

“…The individual cruise data files were converted to WOCE exchange format: a comma-delimited ASCII format for CTD and bottle data from hydrographic cruises. GLODAP deals only with bottle data, and their exchange format is briefly reviewed here with full details provided in Swift and Diggs (2008). The first line of each exchange file specifies the data type, in the case of GLODAP this is "BOT-TLE", followed by a date and time stamp and identification of the person/group who prepared the file, e.g., "PRIN-UNIVRMK" is Princeton University, Robert M. Key.…”

“…The potential errors introduced in any of these procedures are insignificant. Missing numbers are indicated by -999, with trailing zeros to comply with the number format for the variable in question, as specified in Swift and Diggs (2008).…”

“…Over the past three decades, a large-scale comprehensive data set of high-quality CFC data has become available. The observations are from 1986 to 2010, spanning 25 years of CFC observations in the Atlantic Ocean between 65 N and 20 S. Quality-controlled CFC data (Figure 1) were taken from the GLODAP and CARINA data repositories [Key et al, 2004;Steinfeldt et al, 2010]. This data set was further extended with additional data measured in the subpolar North Atlantic (own measurements), at 36 N (M.-J.…”
