Endophytic fungi inhabit vegetable tissues or organs, without causing them any harm. Endophytes can co-evolve with plant hosts and possess species-specifi c interactions. They can protect the plant from insect attacks and diseases, and are also able to produce substances of biotechnological interest. In folk medicine, the bark, roots and fruits of Sapindus saponaria is used to produce substances with anxiolytic, astringent, diuretic and expectorant properties, as well as tonics, blood depuratives and cough medicine. This study evaluated the diversity of endophytic fungi present in the leaves of S. saponaria L. and observed the colonization of host plants by endophytes, using light and scanning electron microscopy. We verifi ed that these fungi are found in intercellular and intracellular spaces. The genera of some isolates of S. saponaria were identifi ed mainly by sequencing of ITS region of rDNA and, when possible, also by their microscopic features, as follows: Cochliobolus, Alternaria, Curvularia, Phomopsis, Diaporthe and Phoma. Phylogenetic analysis showed the existence of genetic variability of the genera Phomopsis and Diaporthe and interspecifi c variation among the Curvularia, Alternaria and Phoma, belonging to family Pleosporaceae.

The continuous search for biologically active compound candidates pushes the pursuit of new substances produced by diverse organisms. Endophytic fungi are known as a promising source of metabolites with several biological activities. Based on the rich Amazonian biodiversity and the chemical potential of microbial sources, three Talaromyces strains, all major endophytes from their respective host plants, were studied aiming at the isolation of biologically active secondary metabolites. Through classical chromatographic approaches, 13 compounds were isolated from the antimicrobial extracts of the studied strains. From these, polyketides, steroids, anhydrides, and phenolic compounds were identified. Among them, two previously undescribed compounds were elucidated based on spectroscopic and spectrometric methods, a homodimer chromanone and a maleic anhydride methyl ester. The antimicrobial activity against a panel of pathogenic microorganisms from extracts, fractions, and isolated compounds was evaluated.

Endophytic fungi are fungi that colonize internal tissues of plants. There are few studies of compounds isolated from endophytic fungi of Amazon plants. Thus, the aim this study was the isolation and structural identification of sitosterol (1), stigmasterol (2), sitostenone (3), squalene (4), ergosterol (5) and ergosterol peroxide (6) from fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides isolated as endophytic from Virola michelli, a typical Amazon plant, used in folk medicine against skin infection. Compounds were isolated by chromatography column on silica and identified by 1 H and 13 C NMR and MS. The presence of phytosterols in fungi is rare and this is the first report of the isolation of the phytosterols sitosterol, stigmasterol and sitostenone from the genus Colletotrichum. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi o isolamento e identificação estrutural de sitosterol (1), estigmasterol (2), sitostenona (3), esqualeno (4), ergosterol (5) e peroxido de ergosterol (6) do fungo Colletotrichum gloeosporioides isolado como endofítico de Virola michelli, uma planta típica da Amazônia, usada na medicina popular no combate a infecções de pele. Os compostos foram isolados por cromatografia em coluna de sílica e identificados por RMN 1 H e 13 C e EM. A presença de fitoesteróis em fungos é rara e este é o primeiro relato do isolamento dos fitoesteróides sitosterol, estigmasterol e sitostenona do gêreno Colletotrichum.
