The Genus Eriosema (Fabaceae): From the Ethnopharmacology to an Evidence-Based Phytotherapeutic Perspective?

The genus Eriosema (Fabaceae) includes approximately 150 species widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions of the world (Africa, Neotropics, Asia and Australia). Throughout these regions, several species are used since centuries in different traditional medicinal systems, while others are used as food or food supplement. The present review attempts to critically summarize current information concerning the uses, phytochemistry and pharmacology of the Eriosema genus and to evaluate the therapeutic potential. The information published in English and French (up to September 2020) on ethnopharmacology or traditional uses, chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of Eriosema genus was collected from electronic databases [SciFinder, PubMed, Google, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, Prelude Medicinal Plants—http://www.ethnopharmacologia.org/recherche-dans-prelude/?plant, The Plant List (http://www.theplantlist.org/), POWO (http://powo.science.kew.org/) and IUCN Red List Categories (https://www.iucnredlist.org/)], conference proceedings, books, M.Sc. and Ph.D. dissertations. The information retrieved on the ethnomedicinal indications of Eriosema genus allowed to list 25 species (∼16.6% of the genus). The majority of uses is recorded from Africa. Phytochemical analyses of 8 species led to the identification and/or isolation of 107 compounds, with flavonoids (69.2%), chromones (7.5%) and benzoic acid derivatives (3.7%) as the main chemical classes. Pharmacological investigations with crude extracts and isolated compounds showed a broad range of activities including aphrodisiac, estrogenic, anti-osteoporosis, hypolipidemic, anti-diabetic, anti-diarrheal, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anthelmintic, anti-cancer, and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities. Despite the low number of Eriosema species tested, there is convincing evidence in vitro and in vivo studies validating some traditional and ethnobotanical uses. However, the utility of several of the described uses has not yet been confirmed in pharmacological studies. Reviewed data could serve as a reference tool and preliminary information for advanced research on Eriosema species.

Using the Atherogenic Index of Plasma to Estimate the Prevalence of Ischemic Stroke within a General Population in a Rural Area of China

Objective. To investigate the relationship between the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and ischemic stroke. Design. We collected a range of data from 11,495 residents (aged ≥35 years; 54.28% female) residing in rural areas of northeast China between January and August 2013, including fasting lipid profile and anthropometric parameters. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the correlation between AIP and ischemic stroke. Category-free analysis was used to determine whether AIP enhanced our capacity to estimate ischemic stroke. Results. Irrespective of gender, AIP was independently associated with the occurrence of ischemic stroke. The prevalence of ischemic stroke increased significantly from the lowest quartile to the highest quartile (females: 10.5%-48.7%, P < 0.001 ; males: 22.0%-36.5%, P = 0.08 ). After adjusting for age, gender, income, education, smoking, drinking, exercise, hypertension, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, atrial fibrillation, and a family history of stroke, we found that for every 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in AIP, there was a 34.8% and 20.9% increase in the prevalence of stroke for females and males, respectively. Curve fitting was also used to evaluate the linear relationship between AIP and the occurrence of ischemic stroke. Category-free analysis indicated that AIP significantly enhanced our ability to estimate ischemic stroke in both females (NRI (95% confidence interval (CI)): 0.188 (0.105-0.270)) and males (NRI (95% CI): 0.175 (0.017-0.333)). Conclusion. Analyses detected a significant and positive linear relationship between AIP and the prevalence of ischemic stroke. This relationship was independent of a range of conventional risk factors.

Cavendish Jepara 30 banana pith (EBP J30) flour and canna starch-based food bar, which was substituted with EBPJ30 Flour, were reported to contain dietary fiber and resistant starch so that it has the potential to improve the lipid profile. However, there has been no reference, research related to the effects of both on the lipid profile, and their ability to bind bile acids. The study aims to analyze the effect of EBP J30 flour diets and canna starch-based food bar, which was substituted with EBPJ30 Flour on hypercholesterolemia Sprague Dawley's lipid profile mice and its ability to bind bile acids. Thirty male mice, aged two months, divided into six groups, namely groups that were given a standard diet including normal mice, negative controls, and positive controls, hypercholesterolemia mice fed the natural EBP J30 flour, blanched EBP J30 flour, and food bar. The 4-week diet intervention and lipid profile analysis were done once a week, and lipid profile analysis was carried out regularly every week. Diet intervention on blanched EBP J30 flour and food bar reduced total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, and increased serum HDL cholesterol levels in mice. The results of in vitro studies suggested that the diet of blanched EBP J30 flour and food bar could increase bile acid-binding capability. Both diets can improve the lipid profile of hypercholesterolemia mice suspected due to the bile acids' binding capacity in the blood.
