Atenolol, (2-[4-[(2RS)-2-hydroxy-3-[(1-methylethyl)amino]propoxy] phenyl]acetamide [1] (Figure 1), is a cardioselective beta blocker and reported to lack intrinsic sympathomimetic activity and membranestabilizing properties. It is used in the management of hypertension, angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmias, and myocardial infarction. It may also be used in the prophylactic treatment of migraine. The usual oral dose for hypertension or angina pectoris is 50-100 mg daily. Atenolol is co-formulated with chlorthalidone, hydrochlorothiazide, nifedipine, amiloride HCl, hydralazine HCl, indapamide, and bendrofluazide [2].
