Cet article propose de définir la notion de vulnérabilité à l’époque moderne à partir d’un vaste corpus de textes écrits par des médecins et par des pasteurs durant la peste de Londres de 1665 et dans son sillage immédiat. Après un rappel des principales caractéristiques de l’épidémie, la première partie analyse les textes ayant trait à la peur et à l’abandon pour révéler la complexité du discours médical et spirituel sur les émotions. La seconde partie revient sur la compétition entre le clergé de l’Église d’Angleterre et les non-conformistes évincés quelques années plus tôt de leurs paroisses, compétition qui se jouait à plusieurs niveaux, que ce soit en chaire ou via la littérature pastorale et pamphlétaire. Étudier la vulnérabilité à travers les publications religieuses, en parallèle avec les traités médicaux, permet d’offrir un panorama nuancé des difficultés spirituelles, morales et émotionnelles que rencontraient les victimes, et de comprendre comment le clergé adapta sa pastorale aux circonstances.
