At the intersection of cultural and natural heritage: Distribution and conservation of the type localities of Italian endemic vascular plants

Abstract: A B S T R A C TWe conducted a GIS spatial analysis with the aim of providing the first quantitative large-scale overview of the distribution patterns of 1536 type localities (loci classici) of 1216 Italian endemic vascular plants and their relationship with a set of descriptive variables. Whereas some variables were used to model the presence-absence distribution patterns of the type localities for the whole set of endemics as well as for the subset of narrow endemics, others (e.g., presence inside or outside … Show more

“…Peruzzi working group for floristics, systematics and evolution of the italian Botanical society, Dipartimento di Biologia, unità di Botanica, università di Pisa, Pisa, italy ARTICLE HISTORY received 19 December 2017;accepted 19 December 2017 The publication of the checklist of the Italian vascular flora (Conti et al 2005) was the first opportunity in which the members of the Working Group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society established an effective network of scientific collaborations. During the years, this collaborative approach has been refined and implemented, allowing to reach important scientific goals dealing with flora alien to Italy (Celesti-Grapow et al 2009, and with Italian endemic flora (Peruzzi et al 2015;Brundu et al 2017). The synthesis by Conti et al (2005) stimulated an impressive amount of floristic and systematic studies so that -after 12 years -time has come for an update concerning the taxonomic and geographic knowledge on the Italian vascular flora.…”

“…The floristic knowledge of a territory is of considerable importance for scientific purposes and for conservation (Carli et al 2018). In particular, the information concerning the endemic plants, such as their distribution and threats, are key elements for driv-ing national conservation strategies (Brundu et al 2017, Orsenigo et al 2018. Wild vascular plants were recently used in some areas of Central-South Italy to evaluate the long-term changes in the floristic composition of vegetation of mountain ecosystems (Calabrese et al 2018, Frate et al 2018) and for risk assessment and management of soils polluted by industrial processes (Visconti et al 2018).…”
