AT 2018lqh and the Nature of the Emerging Population of Day-scale Duration Optical Transients

Abstract: We report on the discovery of AT 2018lqh (ZTF 18abfzgpl)—a rapidly evolving extragalactic transient in a star-forming host at 242 Mpc. The transient g-band light curve’s duration above a half-maximum light is about 2.1 days, where 0.4/1.7 days are spent on the rise/decay, respectively. The estimated bolometric light curve of this object peaked at about 7 × 1042erg s−1—roughly 7 times brighter than the neutron star (NS)–NS merger event AT 2017gfo. We show that this event can be explained by an explosion with a … Show more

“…However, the rate of all types of FBOTs is ≈ 1% of all CCSNe (e.g., Coppejansetal2020). As well, some CEJSN impostor channels that are similar, but not identical, to those I study here might account for other fast transients, e.g., AT2018lqh that Ofek et al (2021) observed. Tsuna, Kashiyama, & Shigeyama (2021) propose a scenario for AT2018lqh where a rotating blue supergiant collapses to form a BH of 30M and blows a disk wind of 0.8M .…”

“…I instead propose that AT2018lqh is a type of CEJSN impostor similar to the polar CEJSN impostors that explain AT2018cowlike transients. Ofek et al (2021) estimate the rate of such fast transients to be of the order of magnitude of the the rate of NS-NS merger.…”

“…We also include the Type Ic SNe SN 2018kzr (McBrien et al 2019), SN 1999cq (Matheson et al 2000), and SN 2005ek (Drout et al 2013, which have been described as FBOTs (Pursiainen et al 2018;Coppejans et al 2020;Wiseman et al 2020;Chen & Shen 2022). We include AT2018lqh (Ofek et al 2021) and HSC17bhyl (Tampo et al 2020), described as FBOTs in Lyutikov (2022) and Coppejans et al (2020). We also include Light curves of ZTF FBOTs with redshift measurements.…”

Consequently, the study of the early emission from SN explosions is at the forefront of current efforts in the field (Modjaz et al 2019).…”
