Asynchronous gameplay in pervasive multiplayer mobile games

Abstract: One of the interesting features in pervasive multiplayer games is that gaming can be blended into other daily activities. However, the players' current context creates challenges for this parallel activity and therefore, the game design should enable the players to participate in the game whenever it is suitable for them. In this paper, we present initial results from a study which explored one game design solution for this challenge, namely asynchronous gameplay. We wanted to find out how asynchronous gamepla… Show more

“…For the purpose of this study, cooperative game play in single-player games which extends beyond traditional video game violence based actions is referred to as "passive collaboration". While some previous studies have defined such mechanics primarily based on their asynchronicity (Bogost, 2004;Saarenpää et al, 2009;Neto et al, 2020), this study adopts a perspective that considers the object-subject relationship perceived by players, as certain instances of passive collaboration can exhibit synchronous characteristics. Zagal et al (2000) provides a comprehensive framework outlining the six key characteristics of multiplayer games.…”

“…Another possible application area is presented through the upcoming growth of asynchronous games [41], especially in the current age of mobile gaming: In many instances of this type of games players can challenge other players without the need of actually playing at the exact same time as the opponent. This allows the fast-paced and very situation-dependent world of mobile gaming to feign battles of various genres like strategy games, turn-based games, but also even real-time role-playing game battles so they can take place whenever it suits a player (cf.…”

“…Existing asynchronous interaction examples support such routine daily activities as email, cooperative groupwork (e.g. learning [29,33]), online conferencing [69], and even pervasive gaming [57]. We argue that application composition will also become one of these routine activities.…”

“…The prototype relies on the user's mobile device as a tool for interacting with the application and controlling application composition. iCompose uses a physical browsing interface [65] to interact with ubiquitous resources and uses an asynchronous interaction style [57] and intelligent assistance paradigm [48]. iCompose comprises two interfaces that supplement each other: the physical and the graphical user interface on the mobile device.…”
