Asymptotic Slow-Scale Stability Boundary of PFC AC–DC Power Converters: Theoretical Prediction and Experimental Validation

Abstract: A unified approach for the stability analysis of both preregulator and two-stage power factor correction (PFC) ac-dc converters is presented. Practical and accurate analytical expressions for the stability boundary are obtained by studying the dynamics of the first harmonic component. The resulting model of this dynamics has an equilibrium point at the origin of the harmonic state space. In the case of a stable equilibrium point, the first-order component converges to zero, and the system oscillates at twice t… Show more

“…Equation (8) illustrates that the sampling gain uncompensated in continuous domain introduces a pair right half plane (RHP) conjugate zeros at half switching frequency, at where a resonance peak occurs in the current loop and results in harmonic oscillation. The slope compensation could weaken this resonance peak and stabilize the current loop.…”

“…The output voltage is sensed for the outer voltage loop to regulate the output voltage. Sensing input voltage is also required for the generation of the desired current reference [3], [4] and the feedforward terms [5], [6]. In [7] and [8], some compensation loops are added to the multiloop control to improve the PFC performance for motor drive applications.…”

“…Although the most of works are focused on analysis of the input current spectrum [4], [5] and dynamic processes in PFC [6], [7], unfortunately, there is quite limited amount of works devoted to the problems of PFC subharmonic stability [8], [9], [10]. In some articles these issues have not got enough attention [11].…”
