Asymptomatic Wolff-Parkinson-White Pattern ECG in USAF Aviators

Abstract: WPW pattern on ECG found in asymptomatic aviators confers < 1% annual risk of arrhythmia or incapacitating events with the highest risk in the younger, healthier, and most fit populations.Davenport ED, Rupp KAN, Palileo E, Haynes J. Asymptomatic Wolff-Parkinson-White pattern ECG in USAF aviators. Aerosp Med Hum Perform. 2017; 88(1):56-60.

“…4 Correspondingly, the SCD rate among the asymptomatic preexcited population is also low. 5,6 It is notable that other studies also report that the majority of patients with VF are resuscitated (Table 2). 3,7,8 The combined risk of SCD/aborted VF is estimated Table 2) and likely to be even lower in the real-world WPW population outside of geographically unique reported studies.…”

“…In a recently published study from the USAF ECG library, 638 aircrew with pre-excitation (0.3% of all aircrew) were identified over a 68 year period. 47 Aircrew who developed high risk features (defined as symptoms, arrhythmia or ablation of a high-risk pathway) were compared with those who remained asymptomatic. Sixty-four of 638 individuals (10%) progressed to the combined endpoint of SCD, arrhythmia and/or ablation of a high-risk pathway with average follow-up of 10.5 years.…”
