Asymptomatic schwannoma of the heart

Abstract: We present a case of an asymptomatic right atrial mass detected on a screening ECHO. Preoperative imaging and intraoperative frozen section suggested an atrial myxoma, but the extracardiac nature of the mass and its adherence to the right superior pulmonary vein and interatrial septum were inconsistent with this. Detailed histological assessment confirmed the diagnosis of atrial schwannoma. Limited case reports have shown complete resection is curative.

“…11e13 It frequently arises from the nervous system of the heart, primarily on the right side, especially from the right atrium. 3,4,11,12,16 The reason postulated for this location is that the origins of cardiac schwannomas are from cardiac branches of the vagus nerve and cardiac plexus. 4,11,16 Schwannomas can occasionally be found in the left atrium or near the left ventricle.…”

“…In addition, it is usually required to for the reconstruction of cardiac chambers [10][11][12][13][14][15]. Therefore, this is best achieved when tumors are encapsulated and well demarcated [16][17][18][19]. However, most research note local recurrence of tumor or metastasis from 2 to 10 months following the operation.…”

“…Other, rarer complications have been reported, such as pneumothorax (0.5–8.3%) [46,66], pericarditis in the subacute [29] or recovery [89], phases of the syndrome, and mechanical complications such as rupture of the free wall of the LV (0.5%) [5,66,9093], perforation of the interventricular septum (0.5%) [66], or rupture of the papillary muscles [94]. …”
