Asymmetry in healthy adult knee kinematics revealed through biplane radiography of the full gait cycle

Abstract: One commonly used criterion in evaluating a patients’ response to knee surgery or rehabilitation is bilateral symmetry. However, the natural symmetry in uninjured healthy adult knee kinematics remains relatively unknown, making it challenging to determine if clinical treatment has adequately restored bilateral symmetry. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the typical side‐to‐side differences in 6 degree of freedom (DOF) knee kinematics over the entire gait cycle in healthy adults using biplane r… Show more

“…It is important to view these reported SSD values in the appropriate context. Gale and Anderst 11 recently reported the typical SSD of ATT and TR in healthy individuals during level walking. In that study, the mean SSD of ATT in the stance phase was 1.3 ± 0.9 mm, while that of TR was 4.1°± 2.5°.…”

“…Given this limitation, the design of the 6DOF model can make up for this shortcoming. The 6DOF model independently tracks the movement of the foot and has 3 markers [ 29 , 30 ], so it seems to be better than the HH model.…”

“…Commercial software was used to identify bone tissue within each scan (Mimics; Materialize) and three‐dimensional (3D) models of each femur and tibia were created separately for the left and right knees. Anatomic coordinate systems were constructed in each right femur and tibia based upon femoral condyle and hip joint center locations, and tibial plateau and ankle joint center locations according to previously established methods 33 and mirror imaged onto the left side after coregistering the corresponding right and left bones for each subject (Figure 1D).…”

“…Knee rotations were calculated following the Grood and Suntay convention 35 . Knee translations were calculated using the vector from the femur origin, located at the midpoint of the femoral condyles, to the tibia origin, located at the midpoint of the most medial and lateral borders of the tibial plateau 33 (Figure 1F), and expressed in the tibial coordinate system. Left knee kinematics results were mirrored to match the sign convention for the right knee.…”
