Asymmetrical cutaneous vasculitis following COVID‐19 vaccination with unusual eosinophil preponderance

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted people's lives across the globe. Vaccines are perhaps the only silver lining in this dark cloud as they mitigate the severity of the disease. However, as more people are vaccinated, various adverse events (AEs) including cutaneous AEs have been reported. Cutaneous vasculitis is one such rare AE with a few cases reported. We report a case of cutaneous small vessel vasculitis (cSVV) with a strikingly asymmetrical distribution, following COVID-19 vaccination.A 31-year… Show more

“…Morbilliform rashes were noted in several cases, but angioedema was not reported. 4 A variety of other skin reactions after COVID-19 vaccination have been reported, including delayed injection-site reaction ('COVIDarm'), 5 small-vessel vasculitis, 6 pityriasis-like eruptions, 7 and other nonspecific drug reactions. 8 In addition, patients with a history of dermal filler injection may be at risk of developing facial swelling.…”

“…Another potential cause for the occurrence of vasculitis is the use of thiazides, which has been known for many years (1) .Although our patient received a low dose of hydrochlorthiazide (HCTZ) (25mg once daily ), drug induced vasculitis due to HCTZ could not be ruled out . Finally, we were curious whether the administration of COVID vaccines could result in vasculitis .Although there have recently been some reports about the use of mRNA based COVID vaccines as a cause of leukocytoclastic vasculitis (8)(9)(10)(11)(12) , the role of inactivated whole virus vaccines such as Sinopharm , Sinovac (CoronaVac) and COVAXIN (Bharat Biotech) should not be overlooked (13)(14)(15) .…”

“…Further research in this field is required, however, to better define the pathophysiologic basis of autoimmune diseases incidence in COVID-19 [61]. It should also be stated that vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 may also be complicated with cutaneous vasculitic phenomena or even IgA vasculitis and AAV [62][63][64][65][66].…”
