“…The dark diving beetle, Hydrophilus acuminatus , is a water scavenger species that inhabits freshwater environments (mainly quiescent water) and/or the surfaces of aquatic plants. At the larval stage, H. acuminatus is carnivorous, feeding on snails, tadpoles and small fish; however, adult H. acuminatus is herbivorous, feeding on aquatic plants [21]. The diving beetle, Cybister lewisianus , is a carnivorous species that inhabits freshwater, especially stagnant water.…”

“…Hydrophilus acuminatus larvae have unique mandibles (asymmetry), with structure well suited for feeding on dextral (right-handed) snails (Inoda et al 2003;Sato et al 2017). In the present study, all stages of instar larvae detected a concealed snail visceral mass earlier than they detected a concealed snail, suggesting that smell mainly was used to search for these food items.…”

“…The dark diving beetle H. acuminatus is a water scavenger species that inhabits freshwater environments (mainly quiescent water) and/or the surfaces of aquatic plants in Korea, China and Japan. At the larvae stage, H. acuminatus is carnivorous, feeding on snails, tadpoles, and small fish; however, adult H. acuminatus is herbivorous, feeding on aquatic plants [22]. While investigating the gut microbiota of the dark diving beetle H. acuminatus , we isolated a novel Tessaracoccus -like strain, designated strain HDW20 T , and subjected it to taxonomic investigation using a polyphasic approach.…”
