Asymmetric crying facies and congenital anomalies.

Abstract: Perlman, M., and Reisner, S. H. (1973). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 48, 627. Asymmetric crying facies and congenital anomalies. The frequency of hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle in a newborn population was 41 in 6360 (1 in 155). No adverse factors were noted in the obstetric background of affected infants and the pathogenesis of the lesion is not clear. The incidence of associated congenital anomalies detected in the newborn period was 2 in 41 (4. 9%). The lesion was predominantly left-si… Show more

“…Leftsided predominance was first observed by Pape and Pickering [1972]. Similar findings have been reported in other series [Perlman and Reisner, 1973;Papadatos et al, 1974;Alexiou et al, 1976], and commented on by Perlman and Reisner [1973]. The reason for this striking tendency is not known.…”

“…1) were examined between February 1985-January 1996. All cases were diagnosed according to the clinical criteria similar to those described in other studies [McHugh et al, 1979;Perlman and Reisner 1973]. Fourteen children, whose age ranged from 9 months to 11 years, were gathered from our pediatric clinic.…”

“…Cayler [1969] later identified the association between ACF and cardiac anomalies, suggesting a ''cardiofacial syndrome.'' Thereafter, reports of other anomalies in infants with ACF indicated that the finding of ACF may serve as a marker of various congenital anomalies [Pape and Pickering, 1972;Perlman and Reisner, 1973;Papadatos et al, 1974;Alexiou et al, 1976;Lin et al, 1997;Lahat et al, 2000;Caksen et al, 2004]. However, these previous studies were descriptive and included only a small number of selected subjects of varying ages, which resulted in major inconsistencies of results.…”

“…It is also known as congenital unilateral lower lip palsy, congenital hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle, and partial facial paralysis [6][7][8]. A wide variety of anomalies involving cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, skeletal, and central nervous systems may be seen in children with congenital hypoplasia of depressor anguli oris [9][10][11][12][13].…”
