Astronomically calibrated ages for geomagnetic reversals within the Matuyama chron

Abstract: We present a magnetostratigraphic record from the western Philippine Sea that is tied to a marine δ 18 O record for the past 2.14 million years. The ages of geomagnetic reversals were astronomically calibrated by tuning the oxygen isotopic stratigraphy, yielding a chronology for the following subchrons: Matuyama/Brunhes boundary, 781 ± 3 ka (slightly above δ

“…This age is consistent with the 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age (a weighted mean of Wu et al (2010) 1001 ± 10 ka) of the TJ obtained from the lava flows in the Punaruu Valley in Tahiti (Singer 2014). The most suitable age for the TJ could be obtained from reconciliation of radiometric dating on volcanic rocks (Kissel et al 2014;Singer 2014) and chronological framework of global deep-sea sediments (Shackleton et al 1990;Channell et al 2002Channell et al , 2009Horng et al 2002;Oda 2002, 2005;Lisiecki and Raymo 2005;Mazaud et al 2009), which yield an age of ca. 990 ka.…”

“…However, between TD7 and IDl, the paleo magnetic samples were collected at widely spaced intervals. If the excursion in TDl represents the jaramillo polarity-normal interval, then all deposits between ID7 and TDl represent the time interval 780-990 ka (Horng et al, 2002), including the hominin remains in ID6. Recently, the strata containing lithic artifacts at Elefante (site TE; Fig.…”
