Astrometry with MCAO: HST-GeMS proper motions in the globular cluster NGC 6681

Abstract: Aims. For the first time the astrometric capabilities of the Gemini Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics System (GeMS) facility at the Gemini South Adaptive Optics Imager (GSAOI) camera on Gemini-South are tested to quantify the accuracy in determining stellar proper motions in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6681. Methods. Proper motions from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for a sample of its stars are already available, allowing us to construct a distortion-free reference at the epoch of GeMS observations tha… Show more

“…1). Following Bellini et al (2014) and Massari et al (2016), we also checked for spurious systematic trends of the measured PM components with spatial distribution, instrumental magnitude and colour, and found none. This is demonstrated in the top-and bottom-right panels of Fig.…”

“…In general, MCAO-assisted cameras are affected by several distortion effects that change the stars coordinates on the detectors (Trippe et al 2010). Several authors have analysed GeMS data in combination with space telescope data in order to establish the astrometric performance reached with GeMS and to constrain its geometric distortions (Massari et al 2016a;Dalessandro et al 2016;Bernard et al 2018). These studies agree that the GeMS-GSAOI detector shows a distortion structure that is repeated in the four chips separately.…”

“…In order to match the reference catalog coordinates with the detector coordinates, a linear transformation has to be applied to take into account rigid shifts, rotations and different scale. For this reason, only contributions of second or higher order to the astrometric error are usually called distortions (Massari et al 2016). Given a FoV, the term 'relative astrometry' refers to measurement of different science objects separations relative to each other or relative to other field objects.…”
