Astrocyte Heterogeneity in the Adult Central Nervous System

Abstract: Astrocytes are the most abundant cell type in the central nervous system (CNS), providing critical roles in the overall maintenance and homeostasis. Over 100 years ago, Cajal first showed morphological depictions of different astrocyte populations. Surprisingly, to date astrocytes remain classified in two groups based on their morphological and neuroanatomical positioning. However, accumulating evidence over the past few years is showing that astrocytes are highly diverse throughout the CNS. Astrocyte heteroge… Show more

“…Astroglia is known to be able to modulate the pain reaction intensity due to the production of cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors [Li et al, 2019]. At the same time, astrocytes, depending on the activation phenotype, can play a double role and exhibit neurotoxic or neuroprotective activity [Miller, 2018]. Phenotype A2 astrocytes exhibit neuroprotective properties, which inhibit neuroinflammation, promote tissue and membrane repair, accelerate cell proliferation, and inhibit apoptosis [Liddelow et al, 2017].…”

“…Cre-negative samples most likely recapitulate the average translation in the analyzed region. With astrocytes being a highly abundant cell type in the CNS (Miller, 2018), it was not surprising that Cre-negative samples were most similar to GFAP samples ( Fig. 2c).…”

“…Astrocytes are the most abundant cell type in the brain, and participate to complex neuronal-glial interactions to assure synaptic homeostasis and metabolic sustainment for neurons (Miller, 2018). As for microglial cells, different phenotypes seem characterize astrocytic activation in physiological and pathological conditions, ranging from a pro-inflammatory A1 phenotype to a protective and anti-inflammatory A2 phenotype (Figure 1) (Miller, 2018).…”
