Background Asthma is the most common reason for emergency visits to hospital and loss of productive hours. In Saudi Arabia, asthma affects more than 2 million people and majority of them have uncontrolled asthma with their quality of life adversely being impacted. It is well known that the prevalence of asthma has been increasing in many places around the world in the last few decades. The present review attempted to identify studies on asthma and associated factors in Saudi Arabian population and assess their time trends and regional variation. Methods The titles and abstracts of retrieved articles were compared to delete duplication and irrelevant data. A data collection form was designed to extract several key components from selected articles like bibliographic information on the article, study population, and sample size. Extracted information was grouped appropriately for data analysis. Database search retrieved 71 articles. Applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 40 articles were excluded and 31 qualified full articles were included for the review. Results Among 31 retained studies, Riyadh had the highest publication output followed by Jeddah. Ten studies were based on ISAAC and 5 on non-ISAAC questionnaires while 5 studies were genetic studies conducted to unravel the genetic basis of asthma. Most of the studies were conducted on pediatric subjects of less than 16 years of age. Sample sizes ranged from less than 150 to more than 10000 with study settings being predominantly urban (22 studies). The pooled weighted prevalence rates of asthma, lifetime wheeze, and rhinitis were 14.3% (95% CI: 13.4–15.2), 16.5 (95% CI 15.5–17.4), and 21.4 (95% CI 20.5–22.3), respectively. An increase in asthma prevalence from 1990 to 2000 along with a stabilized or not so significant decline in the prevalence from 2010 to 2016 was observed. Conclusion The prevalence of asthma varied in different regions without any disparity in prevalence in the rural and urban areas of Saudi Arabia. The understanding of genetic variability and recognition of risk factors in asthma patients can greatly help in individualizing the therapy for the management and control of asthma.

Asma adalah gangguan inflamasi kronik pada saluran pernapasan yang terjadi karena respons tubuh terhadap berbagai faktor eksogen, antara lain alergen, iritasi, dan infeksi virus. Faktor eksogen penyebab asma antara lain alergen yang berasal dari kecoa, tungau, kucing, serbuk sari, dan jamur. Prevalensi asma di dunia semakin meningkat dalam beberapa dekade terakhir, diperkirakan meningkat menjadi 400 juta orang pada tahun 2025. Sekitar 50-80% angka kejadian asma di dunia tercetus karena debu rumah. Sementara itu, 90% pasien asma di Indonesia rentan terhadap pajanan debu rumah dan tungau debu rumah (TDR). Tungau debu rumah merupakan sumber alergen penyebab alergi, misalnya rhinokonjungtivitis alergi, asma, dermatitis atopik, dan penyakit kulit lain.Interaksi gen dan lingkungan menyebabkan inflamasi saluran napas kronik pada pasien asma. Interaksi dapat terjadi dengan berbagai faktor lingkungan, yang terpenting adalah alergen tungau dan polusi udara.Pasien asma mengalami perkembangan gejala asma karena pajanan debu rumah. Hal itu dikaitkan dengan meningkatnya respons imun berupa produksi IgE spesifik terhadap alergen TDR.

Proper management of asthma is crucial for maintaining control over the disease and has a significant impact on the patient’s overall condition. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of self-management and the level of Asthma control in the patients from the Aseer region of Saudi Arabia, as well as to investigate determinants of illness control. A study was conducted using quantitative cross-sectional methods. Researchers utilised a web-based, self-administered structured questionnaire to gather data. The questionnaire included three sections: a socio-demographic section, an Asthma Self-Management Questionnaire (ASMQ), and Asthma Control Test (ACT). An analysis using the chi-square test was conducted to determine if there was a notable connection between the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants and the level of asthma control. A total of 305 responses were collected. The average score for the Asthma Self-Management Questionnaire was 5.72, which corresponds to 40.9%. Based on the scores from the Asthma Control Test, it was found that 60 patients (20.0%) had asthma that was not under control, 94 (30.0%) had asthma that was partially controlled, and 151 (50.0%) had asthma that was well controlled. Factors such as gender, non-smoking status, and having asthma for over 10 years (p ˂0.05) were found to be strongly correlated with improved disease control. Significant gaps were found in patients’ awareness of the most important and critical aspects concerning the condition, medications, and preventative actions that limit asthma aggravation. To address the current situation, hospitals and clinics must make substantial efforts.
