Asthma control, quality of life and successful sputum induction

Abstract: IntroductionInduced sputum is widely used in clinical practice and scientific studies. This technique has become enormously useful in assessment of airway inflammation. However, some asthmatics are unable to expectorate sputum of sufficient quality and quantity necessary for further processing, therefore not providing reliable results. This research study aimed to examine whether asthma control and asthma quality of life influence the results of sputum induction.Material and methodsFourty-seven adult subjects,… Show more

“…It may suggest that this subscale covers a broader sense of burden of treatment and disease itself, but also the necessity of improving the medical information on advantages of shorter protocols. A similar relationship between HRQoL, symptoms of disease and specificity of treatment was also observed in asthmatic patients [23]. …”

“…Nonasthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis diagnosis requires successful sputum induction, but this may be difficult to obtain as many patients are unable to produce adequate sputum samples [35]. In our study, NAEB was diagnosed in 13% of subjects.…”

“…According to guidelines on cough management, NAEB is responsible for chronic cough in about 10–20% of adult patients [ 12 ]. Nonasthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis diagnosis requires successful sputum induction, but this may be difficult to obtain as many patients are unable to produce adequate sputum samples [ 35 ]. In our study, NAEB was diagnosed in 13% of subjects.…”

“…Sputum induction procedure was performed by a trained technician using the method described previously 49,53,54. Briefly, after salbutamol premedication (400 µg), aerosols of hypertonic saline of 3%, 4%, and 5% were each inhaled for 7 mins via ultrasonic nebulizer (Ultraneb 3000, Devilbiss, Somerset, PA, USA) with an output flow of 1 mL/min.…”
